Video: Varanasi cop beaten up by mob in front of wife after car-auto collision

A police officer in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi was beaten up by an angry mob after his car collided with an auto on Saturday, November 23. A video of the incident, now viral on social media, shows a group of men attacking Ajit Kumar Verma, the in-charge of Rajatalab Police Station, even as his wife sat helplessly inside the car.

The altercation began when Verma’s car accidentally brushed against an auto near the Harhua intersection, injuring the auto driver and damaging both vehicles. The injured auto driver, Devi Shankar Rai, a resident of Bhatauli village, sustained a head injury and was taken to Deen Dayal District Hospital for treatment.
As tensions escalated, bystanders turned aggressive, attacking Verma despite his repeated attempts to identify himself as a police officer. Outnumbered, Verma was seen trying to fight back in the video but was overwhelmed. The mob continued the assault even after a sub-inspector arrived at the scene.
The incident has sparked outrage, with both parties filing complaints at Badagaon Police Station. Police are investigating the matter to take appropriate action.
